Brazil has always been a place I’ve wanted to visit since I was a child. I’ve dreamed of the beaches, diverse culture, exotic animals, tropical nature, and much more. This dream finally became a reality when I had the opportunity to study abroad at PUC Rio. While it took some time to adjust, the support and resources provided by the International Student Office made the transition much easier. During my six months in Brazil, I was able to connect with the local community in Rio de Janeiro through volunteering, enrolling in dance lessons, and making new Brazilian friends.
One aspect of the program I found particularly helpful was the requirement to enroll in a Portuguese class. Although I started at the beginner leve3el, learning the basics was tremendously helpful. It gave me more confidence to interact with locals while out and about. Of course, it also helped that Brazilians are very welcoming and friendly, so people were always open to helping. Finally, traveling to other states in Brazil gave me a more holistic perspective of the culture and allowed me to see what makes each region unique. I enjoyed capturing the essence of these places through photography.
